Fort Jackson honored its roughly 1,200 volunteers April 16-19 with a series of events as part of annual National Volunteer Week.

The week "celebrates the great sacrifice and dedication of our Army volunteers," said Marilynn Bailey, Fort Jackson's volunteer service coordinator.

National Volunteer Week, established by Points of Light in 1974, is about inspiring, recognizing and encouraging people to seek out imaginative ways to engage in their communities.

Volunteers play an integral part in the Fort Jackson community, Bailey added.

"Our volunteers assist us in areas where manpower might be short, or programs that rely on volunteers to run them such as youth sports," she said. "A lot of the positions here at Army Community Service" are volunteers as well.

The week-long celebration started April 16 with a screening of a new movie at the Post Theater free of charge to volunteers. Volunteers were also treated to a financial seminar April 18, and a breakfast celebration at the NCO Club April 19.

Madelyn Mercado, head of Fort Jackson's ACS program, lauded the volunteer's efforts and thanked them during the breakfast celebration.

"We can't do it without all your help," Mercado said. "Thank you for all the services you provided" to ACS and Fort Jackson.

The post will continue to honor volunteers during the installation quarterly awards ceremony at 3:15 p.m. April 27 at the NCO club. The ceremony will include the 2nd Quarter Commanding General Helping Hand award, the Volunteer of the Year and the Volunteer Hall of Fame awards.
