McALESTER ARMY AMMUNITION PLANT, Okla. -- Ron Dusenberry, an Ammunition Operations Directorate employee, here, was recently selected as a U.S. Army Materiel Command Employee of the Quarter Award for the first quarter of Fiscal Year 2018.
Dusenberry is the program manager of the M1 105mm high explosives recapitalization and the 5-inch/54-caliber Navy gun propelling charge programs. In this capacity, he is responsible for planning all aspects, including equipment, personnel, supply and processes. He is also a certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, who frequently recommends process improvements.
"Ron has been a tremendous asset to us and is very deserving of this honor," said John Ross, director of Ammunition Operations. "Through his initiative and oversight of these programs, he has succeeded in not only bringing more work to MCAAP, but also saving money for the Department of Defense and the American taxpayer."
Among his specific accomplishments, Dusenberry made process improvements to the M1 recapitalization program, which reduced the unit price by $17 each and resulted in an estimated $2 million annual savings. The reduction enabled Combat Ammunition Systems to renovate a larger number of 105mm rounds to support the warfighter.
He also oversaw the production and maintenance of 5-inch/54-caliber propelling charges, which included overcoming product acceptance and testing obstacles, to deliver more than 37,000 charges for the Navy and Foreign Military Sales.
Dusenberry also addressed a concern about the unserviceable MK 14 tanks used to transport and store the 5-inch/54-caliber propelling charges, which are more than 40 years old. Without a current source for new tanks and a dwindling inventory, he developed a weatherproof self-adhesive label to replace the ink stencils that have worn off the containers. The Navy approved the change that will save them about $21 million over the next five years.
"As a result of his many years of production-related experience, Ron is exceptional at identifying process improvements that result in cost-savings, which make MCAAP more efficient," said Holly Price, chief of the Production Planning Division where he works.
"I'm really honored to receive this award," said Dusenberry. "I'm thankful and appreciate the dedication and support of my workforce family that helped me achieve this recognition."
Dusenberry is the fourth consecutive MCAAP employee to receive JMC and AMC employee of the quarter honors, joining Treaver Price, Billy Black and Steve Qualls.
MCAAP is one of 17 installations of the Joint Munitions Command and one of 23 organic industrial base facilities under the U.S. Army Materiel Command.
