On Sunday, drill teams from the Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard demonstrated their fine skills at the 2nd annual Joint Drill Exhibition. The exhibition was held at the George Mason University Field House in Fairfax, Va. All teams drew a large crowd and spectators were amazed as the four teams showcased their drilling proficiency.
The exhibition started with a short performance by The Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps and led into the presentation of colors. Four judges were selected from each participating service. Sgt. Maj. Kerry Kolhof represented the Army, Chief Dana Wallace represented the Navy, Master Sgt. Richard Hopewell was the judge from the Air Force and Chief Petty Officer Houston Delaney judged from the Coast Guard.
The drill teams were judged on eight areas including difficulty, precision, variety, showmanship, originality, crowd appeal, flow and overall impression. Each subject was worth five points for a total of 40 points.
The Navy Ceremonial Drill Team took first place in the exhibition and proved to be a crowd favorite. The team featured a blindfolded soloist and daring rifle throws.
