FORT BENNING, Ga. (March 5, 2018) -- The Cat in the Hat visited various Child Development Centers at Fort Benning, Georgia, March 2 to celebrate the National Education Association's Read Across America Day.
The NEA's Read Across America Day is a nationwide reading celebration that takes place annually March 2, Dr. Seuss's birthday.
"You can never start reading to a child too early," said Becky Welch, the Fort Benning Family Advocacy Program manager. "Reading is also something a Family can enjoy and do together."
Welch, accompanied by Carolyn Harris, who serves as the coordinator of the Family Advocacy Program's First Steps Program, dressed up as the famous Dr. Seuss character and read a Dr. Seuss book to different groups of children at the various centers.
The First Steps Program has been very involved with child youth services education, Harris said.
"The first three years are so important," she said. "We do our part to encourage parents to read, and to encourage literacy among the students."
Harris, who was also dressed up, joined in on the fun and helped to pass out books and hats to the children before going to the next CDC.
Bernice Huell and Octavia Canty, the director and assistant director of the Sante Fe CDC, said they enjoyed the visit and agreed encouraging early literacy skills are important.
"It's good for children to match the characters with the book and to also learn rhyming skills, which is one of the early pre-cursors of reading," Canty said.
