Detroit Arsenal - Warren, Michigan. The Detroit Arsenal held a 2018 Army Emergency Relief Campaign kickoff event in the lobby of Building 270 at 10 a.m. Mar. 1.

AER assists Soldiers, retirees and survivors with emergency assistance such as emergency travel, health care expenses, and scholarships as well as many other forms of assistance.

Since AER was established in 1942, it has provided more than $1.7 billion in assistance to 3.7 million Soldiers and their families during their 76 years. In 2017, AER assisted more than 36,000 Soldiers and their families around the world.

"Typically Army Emergency Relief at the Detroit Arsenal gives more in assistance than it raises in donations," said Garrison Manager Joseph Moscone. "This campaign is not just about collecting donations, it's about educating soldiers on how to get AER assistance and what AER does."

Moscone stated that during last year's campaign the Detroit Arsenal and surrounding communities collected more than $97,000 in donations. In return, AER provided more than $100,000 in emergency financial assistance. Anyone can donate to AER including Soldiers, military retirees and civilian employees. The donation is tax deductible.

Financial assistance is provided through interest free loans and grants or a combination of both to include such areas rent, utilities, essential vehicle repair, dependent dental care, etc.

The AER scholarship program assists army spouses and dependents with education costs at the undergraduate level.

Staff Sgt. Duane Butler, Dennis Tempia, Joseph Moscone and Master Sgt. Fred Brodie cut a cake for those in attendance to enjoy.

The 2018 AER goal for the Detroit Arsenal is $100,000. The campaign runs from March 1 through May 15. Your contribution is vital and appreciated. Throughout the campaign tables will be set up where civilian employees and Soldiers can donate, or you can contact Staff Sgt. Duane Butler at duane.e.butler.mil@mail.mil or Master Sgt.
