A former German prisoner of war during World War II, Heino Erichsen served out his military time at Fort Knox in 1945 and eventually settled in Texas. In this photo, Erichsen pulls rolls from an oven while Maj. John Warrick supervises him and other German POWs. Later, Erichsen wrote a moving autobiography of his time at the Army post, titled The Reluctant Warrior. He also visited the post on a number of occasions throughout the years. Two of his sons graduated from basic training and later served at the post. Erichsen last visited in 2009, and his speech was published in the Fort Knox Turret. Erichsen died Jan. 13, at the age of 93.
