FORT BRAGG, North Carolina -- (Feb. 6, 2018) Members of the 900th Contracting Battalion and the Mission and Installation Contracting Command-Fort Bragg helped build a home Dec. 16 to support the Fayetteville, North Carolina, area Habitat for Humanity.

Members constructed the exterior siding while participating in a home construction project for a deserving family in Fayetteville, while also building team cohesion, character and esprit de corps.

"The five-hour volunteer opportunity strengthened our team spiritually, by selflessly giving back to the local community," said Capt. Safiul Alam, the 609th Contracting Team leader.

The day started with a safety brief from Chatham McTindal, the vice president of faith and community relations for the Fayetteville area Habitat for Humanity. McTindal issued safety glasses, masks, gloves and aprons followed by an orientation of the house and familiarization with the tools that would be used. Some of the work performed by volunteers included measuring siding, cutting siding to the required size and shape with a compound miter saw, measuring and marking exterior walls, placing siding, and using nail guns to secure material to the home. Some volunteers had experience with home building, while others did not. However, volunteers were all eager to participate in any efforts to improve the lives of residents across the local community. The 900th CBN members appreciate the friendliness they receive from throughout the local community.

Alam said selfless service is one of the Army values, and volunteering is a great example of that.

"It gives the military and civilians an opportunity to work together with a common purpose in an environment outside of their daily work environment," he said. "This type of exposure helps us learn from one another while building strong character traits."

He added that the leadership of the 419th Contracting Support Brigade and 900th CBN emphasizes working as a team, and members of the 609th CT are looking forward to continuing work on the house until it can be presented to a family.

The Fayetteville Area Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit housing ministry that seeks to improve neighborhoods and communities through cooperative efforts to build affordable housing. Cooperative efforts include individual giving, in-kind donations and corporate sponsorships.

The 900th CBN and MICC contracting office are subordinate to the 419th CSB, all located at Fort Bragg. The brigade is one of two that along with two field directorates make up the MICC, which is headquartered at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston, Texas. MICC contracts are vital in feeding more than 200,000 Soldiers every day, providing many daily base operations support services at installations, preparing more than 100,000 conventional force members annually, training more than 500,000 students each year, and maintain more than 14.4 million acres of land and 170,000 structures.
