Keeping an eye on al-Madain

BAGHDAD - Sgt. Matt Bochiardy, of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., uses binoculars to scan the area for threats while providing security during a visit to a soccer field during a site assessment mission April 18 in the al-Madain area of eastern Baghdad. Bochiardy, assigned to the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Multi-National Division-Baghdad, and Paratroopers assessed soccer fields in the area before a series of soccer clinics and tournaments organized by FC Unity. The London-based organization promotes the development of unity through soccer-based programs. The clinic is scheduled to take place in mid-May.

BAGHDAD - A local Iraqi boy shares a laugh with Spc. Nicole Willson, of Hillsdale, Mich., during a site assessment mission April 18 in the al-Madain area of eastern Baghdad. Willson, a combat medic assigned to the Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Multi-National Division-Baghdad, along with her fellow distributed several soccer balls donated by the Kick for Nick organization. The organization honors the memory of a fallen U.S. Soldier, Pfc. Nick Madaras, whose wish was to share his love of soccer with the children of Iraq. Madaras was killed by an improvised explosive device while conducting combat operations Sept. 3, 2006.
