USAG DAEGU, South Korea -- One thing you will notice when you first arrive in Korea is that you can find convenience stores just about everywhere. These convenience stores may be small in size but they carry just about anything you could want from everyday snacks to stationery and simple gadgets. Koreans use these stores frequently for their needs and it has become a part of their everyday routine to visit them.
Because of their quick access and usefulness, the U.S. Army installs their own stores; the Army Air Force Exchange Services (AAFES). The same is true for KATUSAs as they are Korean Army Soldiers augmented to the U.S. Army. The ROK Army coordinates with the U.S. Army to locate their own Post Exchanges inside U.S. Army bases located in Korea.
The United States Army Garrison Daegu Camp Henry KATUSA Post Exchange held its grand opening ceremony on 14 Dec. 2017. Welcoming Remarks were given by USAG Daegu Commander, Col. Robert P. Mann Jr. and Area IV ROK Army Support Group Commander Lt. Col. Jung Hyun-woong, followed by a ribbon cutting ceremony.
"KATUSAs in Camp Henry and Camp Walker have wanted a KATUSA PX to open for a long time," said Jung. "The reason that construction and renovation was done in such a short period of time is because of the great interest in the KATUSA PX, love for our KATUSAs, and the rapid work initiative of USAG staff."
After the ceremony, Key Leaders from the U.S. and ROK Armies, Soldiers, and others who attended, had an opportunity to look around inside. It was the first time the PX was open to the public so everyone, especially the KATUSAs, were interested in the products being sold.
"It is really great that the PX is finally opened," said Cpl. Park, Jong-min, Headquarters and Headquarters Company USAG Daegu. "Before, it took time for us to go off post and buy the everyday items that we needed. Thanks to the PX, we can now easily buy those products. Plus, it's way cheaper than other places."
"I envied other ROK Soldiers when they talked about their PXs. All this food and ramen are going to make me gain weight but I'm still happy," added Pfc. Park, Ji-hoon, 19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command. "I'm also looking forward to buying the snail cream which is a really popular skincare item in Korea. It is half the price of other places so I'm planning to buy it as a gift for my mom."
The Camp Henry KATUSA PX is the second KATUSA PX opened in Area IV, the first being at Camp Carroll. The new exchange is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., except on national holidays.
