Cold winter weather can wreak havoc on skin

VICENZA, Italy - With the winter season upon us, here are the Top 10 tips for combatting dry skin.

1.Take a short bath or shower with warm (not hot) water. Hot water removes protective oils from the skin and releases histamines which can increase itching.

2.Use a mild cleanser and cleanse gently, using only fingertips or a soft cloth (no scrubbing or loofas).

3.After the bath or shower, pat (do not rub) with a soft, dry towel and apply a moisturizer. Ointments and creams tend to be more effective and less irritating than lotions. Look for a cream or ointment that contains an oil such as olive or jojoba oil. Shea butter also works well. Other ingredients that help soothe dry skin include lactic acid, hyaluronic acid, dimethicone, glycerin, lanolin, mineral oil and petrolatum.

4.After medications or moisturizers have been applied, cover the entire body with a good emollient, such as petroleum jelly. Emollients help to seal in the medication and/or moisturizer.

5.Use a humidifier to add moisture to the air.

6.Wear soft fabrics that breathe, such as 100 percent cotton. Wool or other rough fabrics may irritate the skin. If you want to wear wool fabrics or other rough fabrics, wear a soft, breathable fabric underneath.

7.Wash hands frequently to remove harmful bacteria and viruses. If you do need to wash your hands frequently, hand sanitizers are a good alternative.

8.Apply a hand cream after each hand washing. Rub petroleum jelly on your hands before bed.

9.Wear gloves when you go outdoors in the winter.

10.Wear lip balm. Some healing lip balms can irritate your lips. If lips sting or tingle after applying lip balm, switch to one that does not cause this reaction.

Extremely dry skin may require a prescription ointment or cream. Dry skin can also be a sign of a medical condition, such as eczema.
