Fort Sill honors 20 Family of the Year nominees

FORT SILL, Okla., Dec. 7, 2017 -- Twenty families received accolades Dec. 1, during the Family of the Year ceremony at the Patriot Club here.

The 2017 Family of the Year went to Capt. Michael McEunn, his wife, Amanda, and their three children.

McEunn commands C Battery, 4th Battalion, 3rd Air Defense Artillery (ADA).

Amanda McEunn works as a teacher assistant at Woodland Hills Elementary School, where their two younger children, Dylan, 11, and Rylynn, 6, attend school. Their oldest, 17-year-old Courtney, is a straight-A student at Eisenhower High School. She also works roughly 20 hours a week at Los Tres Amigos restaurant.

McEunn said the whole family is involved in volunteer work and service projects around Lawton-Fort Sill at some point in time.

Their oldest daughter belongs to the National Honor Society and runs races around town. The family also volunteers outside of the military.

Dan Farrell, Army Volunteer Corps program manager for Fort Sill moderated the event.

Fires Center of Excellence and Fort Sill commanding general and CSM Maj. Gen. Wilson A. Shoffner and Command Sgt. Maj. Carl Fagan, respectively, recognized the accomplishments of all 20 families with elaborate framed certificates.

All nominees and their families received gifts. The McEunn family received a free weekend cabin rental at LETRA, a free moon bounce rental, a blanket the Fort Sill Artillery Half Section embroidered, and two $200 gift cards.

The Family of the Year award coincides with November's Military Family Month. Several Fort Sill VIPs and commanders and sergeants major attended and congratulated their nominated Soldiers and family members.
