VICENZA, Italy -- The Vicenza Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers program received first-place honors at the annual National Recreation and Park Association conference that took place Sept. 26-28 in New Orleans.

Vicenza's BOSS program claimed the "Best in Army" award for Excellence in Army Recreation 2016-2017.

Jimmy Roddy, director of Sports, Fitness and Aquatics for U.S. Army Garrison Italy's Family and Morale, Welfare & Recreation, was on hand to accept the honor on behalf of the local program.

BOSS Vicenza had to compete first at regional level, Installation Management Command-Europe, against 11 other programs. After taking the regional title for superior achievement, the team's entry was submitted at Army level. In addition to the 12 BOSS programs in Europe, there are 48 in the continental United States and 35 others in OCONUS. To take top honors is indicative of a strong program, said BOSS leaders.

"We submitted our award entry and hoped for the best," said Sgt. Dallas Henry, former BOSS Vicenza president here who was recently selected to move to the IMCOM-Europe BOSS representative position. "It's an honor to receive an award that showcases what we do."

The first-place honor includes a $2,500 cash award which, said Spc. Patty Samples, new BOSS Vicenza president, will go back into the local program.
