WIESBADEN, Germany -- Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges hosted 37 German high schoolers and 9 of their teachers on Clay Kaserne, Oct. 30.

The students took a bus tour of the installation, stepped into the usually classified Operations Center, and climbed abroad a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter.

The U.S. Army Europe Host Nation Relations office coordinated the visit of four Wiesbaden-based Gymnasium and Gesamtschulen as part of its ongoing Public Outreach Program. POP is meant to make the U.S. installation less of a mystery to those who drive by and live near.

The students saw a video of the U.S. Army Europe command and were given the opportunity to pose questions to Hodges. Some of the thoughts discussed involved their concerns for balancing rights with security, while others questioned whether Russia would misinterpret U.S. Army Europe's readiness as a provocation.

"It was good to look behind the curtain. I often drive past, but now I know what is here. You actually have a little city behind the fence, and I'm very grateful to have been able to see it," one of the high school visitors said.
