Lt. Gen. Aundre Piggee, deputy chief of staff, G-4, encourages you to read the brand new edition of Army Sustainment Magazine.

The November-December 2017 edition of Army Sustainment Magazine contains timely insights and focuses on the important and timely topic of materiel and distribution management. These articles are written by some of the Army's best Logisticians and subject matter experts in each of these theaters.

Materiel management has always been key to the success of combat operations and readiness, and with increased tension and uncertainty in the world, it will continue to be crucial in the future.

This issue contains articles authored by Maj. Gen. Daniel Mitchell, Maj. Gen. Ronald Kirklin, and Maj. Gen. Paul Hurley on three important materiel management challenges affecting the Army today: the role materiel management is playing in building Army readiness, changes we are making to materiel management at the tactical level, and how the Army is filling materiel management gaps.

The Army's senior logistician, Gen. Gustave Perna, commander of Army Materiel Command, talks about how successful materiel management will require leaders at all levels to understand processes and ensure discipline in execution. Readers will also get perspectives from other senior logistics leaders from both the past and present. This includes an interview with Sgt. Maj. Edward Bell (Army G-4 sergeant major) on the role NCOs are playing in materiel management, and a historic look at materiel management from Vietnam veteran, retired Maj. Gen. Peet Proctor.

The most sought after item in the magazine is always the Hip-Pocket Guide. GCSS-Army, now employed by 154,000 users in over 1,000 units, is the topic of this issue's handy checklist. Army Sustainment, a bimonthly publication, is prepared at the Army Logistics University and published by the Army's Combined Arms Support Command at Fort Lee, Virginia, for the Department of the Army. The focus topic for the January-February 2018 issue will be: Sustaining Multi-Domain Battle.
