VICENZA, Italy -- More than four hundred students, parents and local community members explored higher education opportunities at the 2017 College Fair Oct. 18 here in the high school gym.

This was the fifth year in a row that a college fair took place in Vicenza. It was a partnership between the Vicenza Military Community, Child & Youth Services Teen Center staff, and Vicenza High School.

With representation of 50 different colleges and universities from across the United States and beyond, the event provided attendees the opportunity to receive information otherwise unavailable to the Vicenza Military Community.

"Living overseas creates unique challenges for our families and makes college selection more difficult for our local students," said Stacey Johnson, assistant director of the Teen Center.

"An event such as this makes it possible for local students to fill their arms with valuable admissions information, pamphlets and goodies, and learn about real-world experiences from those who've attended a wide selection of colleges and universities."

Johnson added that this event would not have been possible without the huge support and participation of local volunteers who represented their alma mater. Cole Keck, a VHS junior, said, "The College Fair was a good learning opportunity; I was able to learn more about different colleges and the majors they offer along with tuition and admissions information."

The fair wasn't just for Vicenza students, either. Prospective college students from Aviano Middle & High School also traveled to Vicenza for the fair. Aviano High School Counselor Denise Colombo said seeing all the schools represented really made a difference.

"The students were very talkative about different colleges on the ride back to Aviano," she said.

This year there were also representatives from the Fondazione degli Studi di Vicenza, Universita' di Padova, Mater Academy, and a representative for Studies in the Netherlands.

During the fair, the VHS AVID students held a fundraiser by hosting a bake sale full of pastries, including Halloween-themed treats that attendees could munch on while enjoying the evening's events. Booster Club volunteers also served dinner with sandwiches, appetizers and beverages.

Anyone who is interested in representing their alma mater at next year's College Fair should contact the Teen Center at 0444-71-7659.
