WIESBADEN, Germany -- U.S. Army Soldiers assigned to the 102nd Strategic Signal Battalion, 2nd Theater Signal Brigade, gathered for a daylong series of leader development classes Oct. 20, 2017 in Wiesbaden.
The Soldier Development Program included classes on the enlisted records brief, official photo, diversity of assignments, counseling and other topics designed to grow junior Soldiers into future leaders.
"I want to give Soldiers is a roadmap how to get from private E-1 all the way through and beyond master sergeant -- something that I didn't get when I was younger," said Sgt. 1st Class John Brandt, 102nd Strategic Signal Bn. S-3 Operations, Plans and Training noncommissioned officer in charge.
He said his NCOs taught leadership styles and how to be effective, but not necessarily how to progress in the Army.
"I want these Soldiers to make it far beyond what I can get -- even if I make sergeant major, I want these guys to make it faster than I made it," Brandt said.
Spc. Kevin Houston, 102nd Strategic Signal Bn. religious affairs specialist, said the classes answered a lot of questions that he didn't even know how to ask.
"I think these classes really dig deeper into what you though you knew, and lets you ask the questions to those people you don't normally see on a daily basis who do know," Houston said.
Brandt said the classes were the first in a series and aims to make the Soldier Development Program a quarterly event. Future classes will be designed based off of Soldier requests and feedback, and will be expanded to include others from across the brigade.
