FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo.--October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital wants you to know what services are available to you.

Primary screenings are done at your yearly visit to your OB/GYN or Family Practice provider. If they have concerns they will send you to radiology for a mammogram. This can be scheduled over the phone or as a walk in to the department seven days a week.

Mammograms are a self-referral policy, which means no waiting for your provider to put an order in. This helps to streamline the process and helps you the patient to not spend time on the phone or waiting for your provider to make the time to put the referral in.

Men are susceptible to breast cancer and can get a mammogram done if needed. Radiology performs ultrasounds of the breasts and they can do ultra sound guided needle biopsies when a lump is found. Ultrasound appointments are available from 07:30 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. for outpatients.

(Editor's note: Capt. Sandra Rodich is the Maternal Child Unit chief and Sarah Mize is an OB registered nurse)
