The Maternal Child Experience at GLWACH

FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo.--Having a baby can be stressful but General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital's Maternal Child Unit and OB/GYN clinic are doing their part to help make it a little easier.

The nurses on the MCU work hard to make your labor and delivery experience unique and personal. They provide education for each phase of your pregnancy. During the last month of pregnancy, a four week prenatal class teaches parents about fetal development, labor, delivery, breastfeeding or bottle feeding, basic infant care, as well as other topics that support the labor and delivery process.

Child birth classes are every Wednesday, on the 5th floor classroom on Wednesdays from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. You must sign up at the MCU at the nurse's station. Tours are available for expecting moms to help them feel prepared and comfortable when they come in to have their baby.

During the labor process, nurses work closely with all members of the healthcare team including Certified Nurse Midwives and Obstetricians and Pediatricians to provide the best holistic care for our patients.

During the postpartum period, nurses share their knowledge about breastfeeding and strive to make new moms as comfortable as possible before they go home with their baby. One mother said she was very happy with the care she received and believes she received the best care and is happy she was able to come to this hospital.

The MCU isn't the only service for women at GLWACH. There's family practice for everyday problems and chronic medical conditions and the OB/GYN clinic for both pregnant women and gynecology services for specialty women's health needs.

There are laboratory services, radiology for those pesky mammograms, pharmacy, cardiology, nutrition support, and public health all in the same building to make getting your health care needs met efficiently. We also provide counseling for those trying to become pregnant. The MCU also functions as a triage unit for pregnant women to come and be evaluated.

The OB/GYN clinic is available for women's health care from preconception counseling, prenatal care, childbirth, to the postpartum care. They have the NST clinic for those who need extra monitoring, triage call line when needed, and everything related to birth control after delivery. The clinic also provides a gestational diabetes class every Wednesday at 2:00 p.m.
