FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas - The Army Family Covenant is committed to providing Soldiers and Families a quality of life that is commensurate with their service and a strong, supportive environment where they can thrive. With April being the Month of the Military Child, as well as Child Abuse Prevention Month, the covenant was exemplified with a calendar full of fun-filled events for children, Families, Soldiers and friends.
The activities began April 3 at Army Community Service following the Child Abuse Prevention ceremony. The doors opened at 1 p.m. for the first annual Operation Baby Shower. The shower was for all pregnant Families and new parents of babies up to the age of one. With attendance over 300, they waddled or rolled strollers into the festivities and played typical baby shower games like the cake walk, dress the baby and guess the number cotton balls. Refreshments were served, vendors handed out informative brochures or advice and even the younger children were entertained with a play area and balloons.
Not to be outdone, April 4's blue skies and bright sunshine held promise for a successful Family Fun Fair held at the Fort Sam Houston Youth Center Gym and surrounding fields. With over 1,000 people of all ages in attendance, seven bouncers, games, hot dogs, face painting and a puppet show educated and held a day full of fun.
According to Paula Ramas, who came from Lackland Air Force Base, the best part of the day was "Everything. A friend told me about this today and we came."
Another big event was the ribbon cutting ceremony of the new skate park designed by architect Ray Vernon of ExerPlay, Inc. in New Mexico.
On hand for the ceremony was professional skate boarder, Chad Knight from San Diego.
Knight said, "This park is the best quality, the ramps and the layouts are great."
Following the events during the daylight hours, the evenings held the first two Outdoor Movie Nights. The first evening's movie was "Kung Fu Panda," presented to over 90 folks at the field by the main post flag pole. At the movies the next night, "E.T. The Extra Terrestrial" thrilled the 100 plus crowd at Dodd Field.
Jennifer Koranyi and her Family attended the movie April 3 and said, "This is great and exciting."
Those in attendance on either night enjoyed the fresh air, a family-friendly movie, free popcorn and the fellowship of other Families and friends.
