GRAFENWOEHR, Germany -- The Department of Defense has named the Joint Multinational Training Group-Ukraine (JMTG-U) as a winner in the 2017 Secretary of Defense Award Maintenance Award, Aug. 28. 2017.

Every year, the Secretary of Defense Maintenance Award Programs recognizes outstanding maintenance units in three categories. The three categories are field-level, depot-level, and maintenance training, advice, and assistance of foreign security forces. JMTG-U placed in the maintenance training, advice, and assistance of foreign security forces in the ministerial category.

According to Chief Warrant Officer 4 Kenya Pinckney, senior maintenance officer for 7th Army Training Command, the award shows JMTG-U's high level of readiness-focusing on manning, equipment, and training.

"A unit must have the right number of Soldiers assigned, the right equipment to accomplish their mission and a well-trained in their key collective tasks that support their mission-essential tasks list," he said.

The evaluation of the award took place last year, while the California National Guard was responsible for the JMTG-U's headquarters at the International Peacekeeping and Security Center in Yavoriv, Ukraine.

The unit's training was focused at partnering at the battalion-level and below, building a professional and capable Ukrainian units to defend Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The U.S. will continue training and advising Ukrainian security forces until 2020, and JMTG-U will oversee defensive and security training for up to five battalions of Ministry of Defense forces per year.
