Improving the level of training and education among Army Medicine residents at Madigan Army Medical Center's Emergency Medicine Residency Program led Lt. Col. Jason Bothwell to earn the title of Program Director of the Year for 2016.

Bothwell, who is Madigan's program director of the Emergency Medicine Residency Program, earned the distinguished award from the Emergency Medicine Residents' Association for his outstanding performance and leadership as a program director.

"To reach milestones like this, it takes a dedicated team. I feel extraordinarily fortunate to work in an organization where we have a disproportionately large number of people willing to volunteer the extra hours to make it special," said Bothwell.

According to the EMRA, there are 234 emergency medicine residencies nationwide from which Bothwell was selected as the best program director in the nation.

In 2016, Madigan's Emergency Medicine residency program had 36 residents, which makes it the largest program of its kind in Army Medicine.

"We try our best to promote a culture of excellence instead of a culture of adequacy. We have to display excellence in everything we do, how we carry out all our duties, how we treat our students, our colleagues, and most importantly, our patients," Bothwell said.

Speaking to Bothwell's fellow staff and leadership, it becomes apparent that he has made a lasting impact in the program and has the utmost respect from his subordinates and superiors.

"Lt. Col. Bothwell is an outstanding program director and an innovative educator who is an advocate for his residents, and continuously enhances his program to best prepare them to care for our unique population," said Lt. Col. Matthew Short, director of the Medical Education and Research Division at Madigan.

In addition to Bothwell's current accolades for his accomplishments as program director, he is also set to be promoted to colonel. Bothwell is adamant to cite his colleagues and teammates as his driving force to succeed, and credits them as a huge part of his success. "Your colleagues become your friends and family; together everyone wants to do well as an organization," Bothwell said.

Bothwell attributes his recent successes to his team's work ethic and commitment to the mission.

"Some of our keys to success are a strong sense of community, residents looking out for one another, and a strong culture of creating opportunities and recognizing those who do more -- that is true with our residents and our teaching faculty."

Madigan's Emergency Medicine residency program continues to groom future Army Medicine leaders and healthcare professionals.

"Anything that comes through the door of the emergency room our residents are equipped to handle when they graduate," said Bothwell. "They will also be more prepared when they deploy in the future."
