Three Avondale teachers were awarded $500 each in November as part of a program administered under the Pueblo Chemical Agent- Destruction Pilot Plant's sustainable development plan. As part of the program, Kevin Rankin, PCAPP sustainable development plan coordinator, awarded these teachers for bringing "green" concepts into their classrooms.
"We began the teacher mini-grant program in fall 2008, and selected Avondale Elementary School as the pilot," said Rankin. "These teachers came up with some very innovative ideas on how to get children thinking about their environment and ways to make it better."
Asia Wells, a K-2 math teacher; Kim Kelly-Hawkenson, a K-5 special education teacher; and Tiffany Marmolejo, a first-grade writing teacher, accepted the awards in front of their students.
Marmolejo will purchase digital video recorders with her award so her students can create environmental public service announcement videos for their peers and families.
Wells said the award money will help her students go "green" by purchasing a subscription to an online learning site, a scanner and flash storage drives so students can save files digitally, thus eliminating the need for paper copies. Kelly-Hawkenson will purchase a variety of multisensory, hands-on creative arts material to cut down on paper waste.
"We're excited to receive these grants," said Principal Carmen Avalos. "We're thankful to Bechtel to allow us to be the pilot for the mini-grants."
