FORT LEAVENWORTH, Kan.--Army University hosts its 2017 Education Symposium June 20 and 21 at Westin crown Center in Kansas City, Mo. The symposium's goal is to link academia, industry, and the public sector, including the United States Army to collectively work toward developing a competency-based education approach to talent.

This year, ArmyU partners with the Lumina Foundation and the Competency-Based Education Network, nationally recognized non-profit organizations that share similar goals and objectives with Army University especially in the area of how competencies relate to talent management, to host the symposium titled "Competency Based Approach to Talent: Connecting Military Higher Education and Workplace Learning."

The 2-day symposium will begin with an introduction to competency based learning, followed by breakout sessions on topics including the Army's Learning Profile, Army Credentialing Strategy, and the Army's 2+2 Alliance with Kansas State University. On day two, attendees will break into small groups to conduct deep dives on alternate ways to assess learning, how to make sense of learning outcomes (including military learning outcomes), and brainstorm ideas on how to capture and record learning outcomes gained form non-standard experiences.

Fort Leavenworth has been the center of Professional Military Education in the Army since Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman established the Schools for Infantry and Cavalry here in 1881. That effort has continued until today's Army University was established on July 7th, 2015. ArmyU enhances the institutional flexibility and operational focus of the Army's professional military and civilian learning systems in order to increase academic rigor and relevance; increase Soldier, Army Civilian, and leader competence, character, and commitment, and expand the educational prestige of Army Learning.

Lumina Foundation is an independent, private foundation in Indianapolis that is committed to making opportunities for learning beyond high school available to all. The foundation envisions a system that is easy to navigate, delivers fair results, and meets the nation's need for talent through a broad range of credentials. Its goal is to prepare people for informed citizenship and for success in a global economy. The Competency-Based Education Network is a group of colleges and universities working together to address shared challenges to designing. Developing, and scaling competency-based degree programs
