ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL, Ill. -- Residents congregated to remember those who served their country in defense of the nation Sunday at Andover Lake Park in Andover, Illinois.

Lt. Col. Scott Grant, operations strategic planner, U.S. Army Sustainment Command, was the keynote speaker. He said service in the Army can teach people the value of discipline, hard work, perseverance and sacrifice.

The "Salute to Veterans" ceremony was held near the town's lake next to three military memorials.

At the end of the ceremony, Gary Snitchler, commander of Cambridge American Legion Post 417, read the names listed on the memorials. Family members placed a yellow rose on the memorial after all their loved one's names were read.

The road leading up to the park was lined with American flags.

American Legion Post 465 provided the honor salute and posted and retired the American flag.

Andover is a town of approximately 580 people located about 30 min. southeast of Rock Island Arsenal, Ill. It was founded in 1835.
