FRANKFURT, Germany -- Chaplain (Capt.) Karyn Berger represented U.S. forces at a German event hosted for children and grandchildren of former Jewish residents at the Roemer, or city hall, May 15.

Both the city administration of Frankfurt and the former residents, many of whom traveled to their parents' and grandparents' former home town of Frankfurt from around the world, appreciated that an American Soldier and rabbi was able to attend the event.

The event was poignant and joyful: poignant because of the memories -- sad and happy -- that many of the guests carry in their hearts; and, joyful because participants had the chance to see and experience the new democratic society and culture in Frankfurt and came together under circumstances drastically different from when their parents and grandparents had to leave Frankfurt.

Both the guests and the Frankfurt city officials enjoyed the opportunity to interact with Berger, supporting and strengthening the relationship between the participants, the city and the U.S. Army.
