At the end of April through the first week of May, Missouri experienced historic flooding that caused significant damage throughout the state.
Since then, hundreds of Fort Leonard Wood employees and volunteers have been hard at work across the installation to repair facilities that were impacted by the flood.
I know the road to recovery may seem slow at times, but please know our team is working diligently to restore services to full capacity in a safe and timely manner. The community's understanding and support during this time has been exceptional, and we appreciate your continued patience during this process.
When the community was asked to conserve water, we all made a tremendous effort to reduce our daily rate of consumption. The water intake system was a priority and was quickly restored. We made adjustments to reopen the East Gate with temporary structures and we continue to assess roads, bridges and water crossings for any damage.
We are also working to restore our Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation facilities. We anticipated reopening the Piney Valley Golf Course May 26 but additional work not identified in the initial assessment is needed on FLW 26, the road that leads to the course. We expect to reopen the golf course as early as June 3. Happy Hollow is currently open though the restrooms are out of commission. Our plan is to restore the campground to full use within the next couple weeks.
Float trips on the Big Piney through the Outdoor Adventure Center will resume once FLW 26 is repaired and individual access along the river is not recommended until water levels recede.
Stone Mill Spring remains closed while Glider Street, the gravel road used to access the spring, is being repaired. Fort Leonard Wood and the U.S. National Forest Service are both working to repair the damage as soon as possible.
No one can predict the impact of Mother Nature, but one thing is for sure, when the flood hit, our team immediately jumped into action to ensure the safety and security of our community. Now we are focused on our recreational areas, and we are dedicated to restoring those facilities and services back to normal.
