FORT KNOX, Ky. -- U.S. Army Recruiting Command announced the 2017 noncommissioned officers of the year today after the completion of the Annual Awards Board at the command headquarters here.
Twenty-two Soldiers, representing USAREC's six recruiting brigades, spent the last two weeks on post demonstrating their knowledge, skills and abilities in hopes of being named the top in their respective categories.
The 2017 USAREC noncommissioned officers of the year are:
First Sergeant of the Year: 1st Sgt. Ricky Webb, 2nd Recruiting Brigade, Atlanta Recruiting Battalion
Regular Army Noncommissioned Officer of the Year: Staff Sgt. Christopher Geber, 3rd Recruiting Brigade, Chicago Recruiting Battalion
Army Reserve Noncommissioned Officer of the Year: Sgt. 1st Class Richard Barcus, Medical Recruiting Brigade, 6th Medical Recruiting Battalion
Center Leader of the Year: Sgt. 1st Class Michael Harter, Special Operations Recruiting Battalion
Barcus will represent USAREC at the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command Best Warrior competition July 16-21, at Fort Jackson, South Carolina.
All competitors completed a land navigation course; a 12-mile ruck march; improvised explosive device identification; and assembly/disassembly and functions check of the M9, M16, MK19, M240B and M249.
In addition to a variety of other physical warrior tasks, they also completed a 1,000-word written essay about either USAREC priorities or NCO 2020 and appeared before a board, which tested their knowledge on Army regulations and recruiting functions.
The board selection was based on the whole-Soldier concept, including personal appearance, height, weight, physical fitness, communication skills, and recruiting and warrior task skills.
"Win or lose here today, (all of the candidates) are the top Army recruiters, top Reserve NCOs, top center leaders and top first sergeants for their recruiting brigades, and that, in itself, is a phenomenal feat," said Command Sgt. Maj. Anthony Stoneburg, USAREC's senior enlisted leader and head of the board for the competition.
