ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. -- Any time of the year is a good time to have safety in mind, and who better to push the importance of that practice than Cynthia A. Massengale, Safety and Occupational Health Manager, U.S. Army Communications-Electronics Command (CECOM), Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG), Maryland and her trusted team of safety professionals.

Not too many months ago, when the calendar turned to the chills and challenges of winter, the CECOM Directorate for Safety worked tirelessly toward making its Winter Safety Campaign one that the Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) community would warmly embrace. With an overarching goal of educating the CECOM workforce on the hazards of winter, winter activities, and how to mitigate those hazards, the First Annual Winter Safety Campaign, which kicked off in January, yielded nothing less than positive results.

According to Massengale, the directorate included a quiz on each of its bi-weekly posters to encourage the CECOM workforce to review the winter safety information it had produced,

"If an employee submitted a response to the CECOM Directorate for Safety, they were given the opportunity to win one of 20 incentive awards," said Massengale. "We had over 400 quiz responses from all across the CECOM spectrum during the 12-week campaign, resulting in 120 bi-weekly winners, and one Grand Prize winner. The Grand Prize for the campaign was an Emergency Car Kit that included survival gear, sanitation, first aid and entertainment items."

Toni Terry, an Integrated Logistics Support Center (ILSC) employee for more than 10 years, who walked away as the grand prize winner of this year's Winter Safety Campaign, was unwavering in her expression of both surprise and thanks. "I have never won anything in my life. So, I am excited and so appreciative. I need and can use everything in this car care kit. So, I am very thankful."

The Winter Safety Campaign was communicated across the CECOM workforce through supervisors and collateral duty safety officers. To further promote safety awareness and accident prevention, bi-weekly ads were posted on lobby kiosks, FaceBook and the CECOM Safety SharePoint site.

"The Winter Safety Campaign is part of the CECOM Mishap Prevention plan. It's also one of the many mishap prevention efforts that the Directorate will implement in 2017," said Massengale. "I encourage each of you to stay alert, and keep your eyes open for this year's Summer Safety Campaign."
