ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA - On March 27, 2017, the U.S. Army Office of the Chief of Public Affairs and the U.S. Army Medical Command Directorate of Public Affairs announced that Army Warrior Care and Transition's Strategic Communications team was among the winners in the 2016 Maj. Gen. Keith L. Ware Communications Awards Competition.

The Maj. Gen. Keith L. Ware Communications Awards are given annually and recognize Soldiers and Department of the Army civilian employees for their excellence in achieving the objectives of the Army Public Affairs Program. The WCT communications team received this year's KLW award for Outstanding Communications Campaign (Unit) for their efforts in support of the 2016 Department of Defense Warrior Games at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York.

During the event, the WCT communications team executed a plan that included media engagement with local and national outlets, social media coverage, written articles, branded print materials -- including an athlete biography book -- and a section of the website devoted to Warrior Games.

Throughout the games, the team highlighted celebrity involvement in order to promote the Warrior Care and Transition Program, including covering master of ceremonies, Jon Stewart and musician Gary Sinise.

According to WCT leadership, the communications campaign ultimately raised awareness for both Warrior Games and the program. "Effective communication is vital to the overall success of the Warrior Care and Transition Program", said Col. Matthew St Laurent, Deputy Chief of Staff, Warrior Care and Transition. "We are using the communications tools available to us to tell the amazing stories of our athletes and the world is taking notice. I'm very proud of our communications support team and this recognition," St Laurent added.

In addition to the Army-wide award, WCT won first place in Outstanding Communications Campaign (Unit) and Outstanding Digital Presence (Unit) in the MEDCOM Public Affairs Competition's journalism categories. The latter award was based on WCT's strong digital communications presence throughout the year through its website and social media platforms: Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

"Educating our stakeholders on the successes of our wounded, ill and injured Soldiers is a line of effort that we track on a daily basis," said Col. Thom Sutton, Director, Synchronization Directorate, Army Warrior Care and Transition. "To be recognized for supporting an enduring and sacred mission is a win for the Army, U.S. Medical Command and all of our wounded, ill and injured Soldiers, veterans and their family members," said Sutton.
