In pursuit of improved performance at each of its Medical Treatment Facilities (MTFs), the United States Army Medical Command (MEDCOM) conducts an annual sustainability data call for a wide range of metrics. This information is used for recognition within the healthcare industry, but also to benchmark against peers internally and externally; identify opportunity areas; and track trends over time. The award application is through Practice Greenhealth (PGH). PGH promotes sustainability within the healthcare setting by empowering its members to increase operational efficiency and environmental stewardship while improving patient safety and care through tools, best practices and knowledge sharing. This year, 28 MEDCOM MTFs are receiving awards from PGH for their noteworthy sustainability achievements (up from 12 in 2016).

The MEDCOM sustainability program is pleased to announce the PGH 2017 Environmental Excellence Award winners:

Type of Recognition-
System for Change: The System for Change Award recognizes health systems that are working cohesively to set system-wide sustainability goals, track data, benchmark, and share successes in environmental performance. Depending upon the system size, a certain percentage of facilities must win the Partner for Change Award in order for the system to be eligible.

Partner for Change (PfC) Emerald Award: PfC Emerald Award recognizes hospitals that demonstrate superior sustainability programs. Hospitals receiving this award designation are demonstrating strong sustainability program innovation, implementation and cross-functional excellence.

Circle of Excellence -- Green Building: Circle of Excellence recognizes hospitals for outstanding performance in one specific area of expertise (outstanding performers in Waste, Energy, Food, Chemicals, Greening the Operating Room, Green Building, Environmentally Preferable Purchasing). Presentation of the Circles of Excellence Awards, up to ten in each category, go to facilities that have the highest overall scoring and best meet key performance indicator targets.
