Radford, Va.-- Radford Army Ammunition Plant and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University conducted the 2017 Big Event throughout the New River Valley on April 8.

The Big Event at Virginia Tech is a student-run community service effort that has grown into the second-largest event of its kind in the nation. Every spring, thousands of students, faculty, and staff come together to complete hundreds of community service projects throughout Blacksburg, Christiansburg, and the New River Valley. In this case, Virginia Tech partnered with RFAAP for the installation's Adopt-A-Highway cleanup.

This marks the second year that staff at RFAAP connected with the Big Event to collect litter on Belspring Road and Gate 10 Road. These thoroughfares connect Route 114 to the back gate of the plant.

After a short safety brief from RFAAP staff, volunteers from the Virginia Tech Hospitality Management Club collected 13 bags of garbage along the two roads.

"The clean-up was a great success," said Lt. Col. Alicia Masson, Commander, Radford Army Ammunition Plant.

The Adopt-a-Highway program provides an opportunity for interested groups to clean up litter and be recognized for their efforts. Each year, nearly 18,000 Adopt-a-Highway volunteers collect more than 25,600 bags of waste along Virginia's highways.

Radford Army Ammunition Plant has been a member of the Adopt-A-Highway program for over 20 years. This partnership is an initiative of RFAAP's long-standing commitment to environmental awareness and stewardship.
