Joint Base San Antonio - Fort Sam Houston, Texas (April 14, 2017)- Army Medicine's Patient Administration Systems and Biostatistics Activity (PASBA) has launched an internal web portal making actionable data available to customers thereby enhancing its integral role in quality healthcare operations in Army Medicine.

PASBA, a health information systems organization, has now optimized how it does business in order to better serve the needs of the Army Medical Department and its customers, from the U.S. Army Medical Command and Office of the Surgeon General down to individual Army clinics, by providing innovative web-based tools and reports.

The new website includes coding guidelines, compliance policies, and education and training materials for medical record coding professionals at Army medical treatment facilities. The website also provides access to data analytics, data quality policies, regulations, metric reports and deployed medical record guidance and policies. This site hosts a suite of custom web applications and reports designed and developed for their customers by their expert team of information technology specialists. Custom web applications include the Web Interface for Scanned Patient Records--a restricted search capability for scanned treatment records of deployed personnel--and the Chronic Pain, High Utilizer & Poly-pharmacy (CHUP) application--a reporting capability providing data for management of patients' prescription drug usage.

Marsha H. Graham, DAC, MSN, a Clinical Case Manager for the Primary Care Service Line/RHC-P ClinOPs in the Pacific Regional Health Command, commented about CHUP, "Having the CHUP data and managing these patients can make an impact, not just in saving money, but making appointment space for others."

The PASBA Division Chief, Lt. Col. Aaron J. Braxton II, introduced the concept of a Commander's Corner for the website, envisioning a comprehensive solution and location for all PASBA metrics. He has engaged leaders at all levels to increase awareness of the depth at which PASBA is intertwined with every MTF within the AMEDD. This awareness also highlights the tools that PASBA provides to every MTF to improve their clinical and operational functions. He also recommended deployment of a statistical analysis system that will enhance the ability of PASBA and all members of its parent directorate to provide improved analytics and actionable information to their customers.

In addition to the website, Lt. Col. Braxton guided the organization through its first strategic planning conference that resulted in the creation of a new mission and vision statement. He also energized the team to think beyond the normal parameters of everyday business, while inspiring the group to redesign PASBA's logo and motto to: Inspired team of professionals...Where innovation meets inspiration.

PASBA, in existence since 1971, provides medical coding training and auditing and data quality oversight to 32 Army medical treatment facilities. PASBA provides data analytics for a wide range of customers within MEDCOM, across the Military Health System, Department of Defense and the federal government. It also provides deployed record processing and retirement services to DoD. PASBA's efforts directly support MEDCOM's business and clinical operations and readiness priorities.
