This year's inaugural Emergency Medicine PA of the Year award goes to Major Jonathan Monti, PA-C, US Army.
The EMPA of the Year award was designed to recognize a member who has demonstrated exceptional service and leadership to the emergency medicine physician assistant profession and/or the community as it relates to emergency medicine in this past year.
Major Jonathan Monti represents the epitome of the Emergency Medicine Physician Assistants (EMPA). Jon's 17 year EM career began as a front-line, U.S. Army PA within the esteemed 82nd and 173rd Airborne Infantry Divisions, wherein he was decorated for multiple combat tour accomplishments during the global war on terrorism, including being one of three PAs to combat parachute assault into Iraq. Jon was selected for the first EMPA Fellowship requiring a doctoral dissertation research project, wherein he blazed trails by publishing evidence-based data proving PAs' skills utilizing ultrasound to accurately detect pneumothorax in live porcine models. Since then, Major Monti continuously proves himself a prolific scholar, researcher, and mentor; he has developed and mentored numerous, successful prospective research protocols resulting in peer- reviewed literature including textbook chapters, case studies, white papers, and cutting-edge prospective research.
Jon's zeal for EM skills is exhaustive; he successfully completed a physician EM Ultrasound (EUS) Fellowship. In typical Jon fashion, he keenly recognized the emerging utility of bedside US, and humbly 'paid it forward' by creating and leading a feasible and robust EUS training pathway to maximize APP EUS skills and improve patient care. He is now nationally known as an EUS expert amongst physicians and advanced practice colleagues. Major Monti is a leader in the Military Medical Community; he currently serves as both Director of the US Army/Baylor EMPA Program and Deputy Director EUS Fellowship at Madigan Hospital, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.
Jon's initiative expands well beyond military service, to include serving the SEMPA Education and Ultrasound Committees, ACEP Ultrasound Task Force for Advanced Practice Providers, and Vice President/Founding Member for the Society of Physician Assistants in Clinical Ultrasound. Jon's dedication to the EMPA profession is unmatched. In 2017, Maj. Monti will retire from active duty military service.
