The car swerved hard right, then left, and crashed hard into the median. The woman inside the car held on tightly as the car flew into the air and landed back down on the median.
This is what Sgt. Timothy Kleinsmith, a medic assigned to Charlie Company 703rd Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division witnessed while on his way home from work.
Kleinsmith said he stopped his car and dashed to the wrecked vehicle to see if the driver was ok.
There he saw a woman sitting there, dazed from the sudden crash with a sign from the median protruding from her leg.
"She was severely bleeding and was in and out of conciseness so I ran back to my vehicle to grab my emergency bag," said Kleinsmith.
Fortunately, the former Cincinnati Ohio S.W.A.T. paramedic always kept an emergency bag in his vehicle and knew exactly what to do in response to an accident.
"I threw a neck brace on her to prevent further spinal injuries and then applied a tourniquet to her leg to stop the bleeding," said Kleinsmith.
To make sure she stayed awake, Kleinsmith asked the woman questions and found out her name was Sandra.
Fifteen minutes later, paramedics arrived and rushed Sandra to the hospital for further treatment. Kleinsmith said he is glad that Sandra is doing well.
"To me being a Soldier doesn't stop when you take your uniform off. I represent the Army, our country, my family and fellow Soldiers," said Kleinsmith. "As a noncommissioned officer I believe that I'm a direct reflection of all my Soldiers and my leaders."
