In a successful organization, proactive leadership is practiced at all employee levels.

As the Aviation and Missile Command strives to meet its mission in support of Soldiers, senior leadership is relying on the Leader Investment for Tomorrow program to develop Army leadership attributes and competencies within AMCOM employees throughout the organization.

While AMCOM and Team Redstone managers and supervisors participate in the program's Intermediate LIFT and Advanced LIFT courses, the program is now making available its Upward LIFT course -- popularly known as UpLIFT -- to AMCOM GS-10 and below employees.

"AMCOM wants to provide leadership training opportunities for all employees. There is a lot of value in leadership training," said Jared Tarver, a Human Resources specialist with AMCOM Operations (G-3).

"But, UpLIFT goes well beyond teaching leadership skills. It also teaches Army values. These are values that you rely on at work as well as outside your work life. They are values that ensure we remain ethically and morally correct."

The Training and Career Management Division of AMCOM Operations is now accepting applications for a newly designed UpLIFT course set for June 19-23 at Toftoy Hall. Tarver and Michael Roberts will co-teach the course.

While Intermediate LIFT and Advanced LIFT are 11-month programs, this year's UpLIFT course will be taught in one week with mentoring ongoing until graduation in December. Upon completing the classroom portion, students will be required to attend the LIFT Leadership Forum set for July 12 and to participate in self-development mentoring from July through November. UpLIFT students will graduate with students from the other two leadership programs on Dec. 13.

"This is our eleventh year to teach LIFT courses. In the early years, UpLIFT was a week-long program that we did with interns. This year, we've taken LIFT back to the week-long program," Tarver said.

UpLIFT is designed to develop skills and provide knowledge that enables students to become proactive leaders while applying the seven Army Values -- loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and personal courage -- at any organizational level. Students will learn through small group discussion, personal experiences, self-discovery, personal development, and classroom exercises regarding leadership attributes and competencies. Students will complete a selfless service project at a local non-profit organization, learn from guest speakers and complete a group presentation based on their interpretation of how they will incorporate the Army Values into their daily life.

"This format is catered to the students. The class takes on its own life depending on what the students bring with them into the classroom in terms of their background, personalities, experiences, training, skills and capabilities, and how they interact with each other," Tarver said.

"On Friday, they will brief about what they have learned and the unique way they will implement leadership skills in their lives."

Each student will choose their own mentor and then meet with them at a minimum once a month to discussion leadership principles.

It is hoped that UpLIFT students will go on to take the iLIFT and Advanced LIFT classes.

"We want to see the steady progress of students through leadership training and into senior executive service training, if that's what they want," Tarver said.

Twenty-five students will be selected for UpLIFT. Deadline for AMCOM applications is May 12. After that date, if vacancies remain, it will be opened to Team Redstone for applications. For information and to apply, visit: https://amcom.aep.army.mil/G3/CMD/suptool/LMS/UpLIFT/default.aspx . All applications must be completed and approved by an employee's supervisor to be considered.

Applicants are highly encouraged to read Army Doctrinal Reference Publication (ADRP) 6-22: "Army Leadership." For more information regarding the UpLIFT course, contact Tarver at 842-9040 or at jared.b.tarver2.civ@mail.mil; or Roberts at 842-6458 or at michael.d.roberts.civ@mail.mil.
