MIHAIL KOGALNICEANU AIR BASE, Romania -- With an international appeal to the importance of women's equality, Mayor Ancuta Daniela Belu of Mihail Kogalniceanu gave a speech in honor of Women's History Month at Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base, Romania on March 28, 2017.

The speech was given during lunch at the base's dining facility. It touched on the importance of women in the political spectrum and the profession of arms, and highlighted the unity between the U.S. troops and Romanian public. Belu accepted her guests with open arms early on in her speech.

"You are all a part of our big family here," she said.

The event showed the eagerness of the U.S. to engage with the Romanian public. The Army is currently in Romania as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve, a NATO mission between the U.S. and its European Allies and partners to promote peace and regional stability.

A variety of units working together at the base were present at the luncheon. Cpl. Sialofioaana Meredith, a chaplain's assistant with the 118th Chaplain Detachment, shared her thoughts on the mayor's heartfelt comments.

"I thought the mayor's words were very inspirational," she said.

The event was a chance for the Romanian people and U.S. troops who regularly work side-by-side to mark that relationship in an official capacity, and a large crowd of civilian workers and troops listened closely during their lunch. The mayor ended her speech thanking all the U.S. women and men present.

"We feel privileged to have you here in our community," she said.
