ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. -- "If you want to build a ship, don't drum up the men to gather wood, divide the work, and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea." These words by philosopher and author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry rang loud and clear amid robust applause as Senior leaders, family members, and a host of friends and colleagues came to honor the promotion of Liz S. Miranda to the Senior Executive Service, or SES.
Miranda, director of the U.S. Army Communications-Electronics Command Integrated Logistics Support Center, or ILSC, at APG, was administered the SES oath by Maj. Gen. Bruce T. Crawford, CECOM commanding general, during a Feb. 14 ceremony at Myer Auditorium.
Calling it an honor to participate in the ceremony, Crawford referred to Miranda as a sterling example--the epitome of a trusted professional.
Liz is one of only 1,208 senior Executive Service members in the Department of Defense [workforce], that's roughly 250,000 civilian employees by my last count.
"Beyond that, she now belongs to an even more elite group of approximately 398 females in the Senior Executive Service who support the joint force team…the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard. You are truly living the legacy of many who have walked in the same footsteps -- who have blazed the path. As you go forward, make sure that you keep that in mind. You get the opportunity today, to stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before you."
Having served as the director of the CECOM Deputy Chief of Staff for Resource Management, G8; executive officer to the deputy to the commanding general for Operations and Support; chief of the reset Plans and Execution Branch in the Logistics and Readiness Center (LRC); and deputy chief of the Army Reprogramming Analysis Team (ARAT) Program Office in the Software Engineering Center (SEC), for Miranda, her career has involved a flood of endless responsibilities and opportunities.
"I cannot begin to describe the incredible feelings of gratitude to so many of you that have over the years, contributed to my personal professional development," Miranda said to attendees. "I am honored and humbled by this recognition, for I know I would not be standing here today, had it not been for leaders who believed in me -- leaders who took a chance on me, and who encouraged and inspired me to be the best. I thank you all."
In her capacity as director of the CECOM ILSC, Miranda provides leadership and guidance to a global organization of more than 2,000 employees in more than 20 countries and 100 sites, with an annual budget in excess of $1.2 billion dollars. She now serves as the command's senior leader in developing a vision, strategy and implementation plans necessary to achieve an integrated enterprise approach to logistics for Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) weapon systems.
