FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. -- Commanding General of the United States Army Medical Command and 44th Army Surgeon General, Lt. Gen. Nadja Y. West, and MEDCOM Command Sgt. Maj. Gerald C. Ecker visited General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital Feb. 7.
The purpose of the visit was to engage with General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital's leaders and staff in conjunction with her virtual health campaign.
West's virtual health campaign provides clinical services across 18 time zones in over 30 countries and territories across all regions and in the operational environment.
They toured the hospital and learned about GLWACH's Beneficiary Instant Provider Appointment Scheduling System, which allows patients to bypass a wait in the Emergency Room by booking an open appointment with a provider either on-the-spot or over the Internet from home or anywhere with a smart phone.
Another new technology GLWACH's Maternal Child Unit uses is the Polycom. The Polycom allows providers at GLWACH to see and talk with providers from St. Louis's Children's hospital using an internet based system. The Intensive Care Unit also uses a similar system called eICU. This system allows providers to see and speak with a critical care provider at Baptist Health hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas.
West, Ecker, and GLWACH's leadership also stopped at GLWACH's Surgery department, the 43rd Adjutant General Reception Battalion, the Maneuver Support Center of Excellence, and toured the installation during their visit.
West and Ecker explained three messages from the MEDCOM vision of Army Medicine during their engagements with hospital leaders and staff. These messages focused on being a premier, expeditionary and globally integrated medical force executed "with a sound mind, caring heart and compassionate hand," Ecker said.
"Stay well informed about what's going on and how that impacts you as healthcare professionals," West said. "This will help you be good advisors to the installation commander on all things medical."
