WIESBADEN, Germany -- Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and 212th Combat Support Hospital, both of Rheinland-Pfalz; Kaiserslautern, were recognized in the U.S. Army Europe Commander's Cup and Sports Program for Fiscal Year 2016 during the Winter Commanders' Conference, Jan. 25 at the Community Activity Center at U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden.

Army battalions and units from across Europe competed in softball, combat cross country, flag football, basketball, soccer, volleyball, Army 10-miler qualifying race, combatives, running events and installation-hosted events, such as boxing, golf, obstacle courses and pool, during the previous fiscal year, according to Installation Management Command Directorate-Europe Family and MWR.

The idea behind the competition is to promote physical fitness, troop morale and esprit de corps, according to IMCOM-Europe Family and MWR. It is designed to develop team cooperation and effectiveness through athletic competition, self-confidence and leadership qualities via a competitive and recreational channel.

USAREUR Commanding General Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges, who presided over the award ceremony, highlighted the importance of leader development, as one of three enduring priorities.

"I'm happy each year that we do this to see a crop of great men and women who demonstrate that," he said.

The USAREUR Commander's Cup Program is held every fiscal year.
