Most people wouldn't credit Reese Witherspoon for igniting a passion of law in them, but University of South Carolina School of Law students Robyn Walters and Jillian Pope comfortably admit through laughs that "Legally Blonde" influenced them.
"I watched 'Legally Blonde' in like middle school in the seventh grade and was like that looks interesting," said Walters. "Also, a lot of my friends' fathers were lawyers and seeing them
also sparked my interest."
The two women are currently completing a 13-week externship at Fort Jackson's Office of the Staff Judge Advocate.
Their first day was Jan. 13.
"I'm really excited," said Pope. "In law school we don't really have a military law class so this is my first exposure to it."
An externship is different from an internship. During an externship, externs primarily shadow someone on a job while interns at an internship are working a job.
Pope and Walters will be shadowing the labor and employment law division during their externship. They hope by the end they learn lots of skills from this experience.
"I've never done labor and employment law so this is this is a new life experience," said Walters.
Although this type of law is completely new to them, Pope and Walters are both familiar with the military; Pope is a Army spouse and Walters completed an internship with the Navy.
"I would like to join (the Judge Advocate General Corps) when I graduate," said Walters. "What's really important to me is finding out what branch fits me the best. Which branch feels like home."
