FORT WAINWRIGHT, Alaska - The first baby of 2017 made her appearance at Bassett Army Community Hospital at 2:11 p.m. Jan. 1.
Myra, 9 pounds, 9 ounces and 21 inches long, was born to Master Sgt. Tia Schrader and husband Master Sgt. Ken Schrader, both stationed at Eielson Air Force Base as part of the 354 Maintenance Group.
Tia, whose scheduled due date was Jan. 1, began having contractions early Sunday morning and the pair made their way to Bassett from their home in North Pole at 5:30 a.m.
Commander for Medical Department Activity-Alaska, Dr. (Col.) Christopher Jarvis delivered baby Myra with the assistance of nurse midwife Georgann McBrayer, and Maj. Lindsay Felker.
"It was wonderful to be here and be a part of the birth, Jarvis said. "Everything went according to plan."
The Schraders were both thankful for the care received during delivery and during prenatal appointments.
"The staff here is amazing," Ken said. "We couldn't have asked for anything more."
In addition to baby Myra, the family also went home with a gift basket of baby items put together by staff from the maternal newborn unit.
Myra, the fourth child for Tia and the couple's second, rounds out the couple's family with two boys and two girls.
