On 9 January 2017, Ms. Anne L. Richards was sworn in as The Auditor General of the U.S. Army at the U.S. Army Audit Agency's Operations Center on Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Prior to assuming the duties of The Auditor General, Ms. Richards was the Assistant Inspector General for Inspections and Evaluations with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Office of the Inspector General.

Ms. Richards began her career in Federal service in 1984 as an auditor with the U.S. Army Audit Agency. In 1999, she took the position of Regional Audit Manager for the Central Region with the U.S. Department of the Interior. In 2005, she entered the Senior Executive Service as the Assistant Inspector General for Audit at the Department of the Interior. She joined the Department of Homeland Security as the Assistant Inspector General for Audits in 2007 and became the Assistant Inspector General for Inspections and Evaluations in 2015.

Ms. Richards has been recognized with numerous awards for her leadership and contributions to promoting the integrity of Federal programs. She received the Presidential Rank Award for Meritorious Service in 2015. She was awarded the Office of Inspector General Team Award in 2005 and 2002, and she was honored with the Office of Inspector General Distinguished Service Award in 2001. She received the U.S. Army Audit Agency Change Leader Award in 1996 and the Northern Virginia Association of Government Accountants Service Award in 1994. A certified public accountant, Ms. Richards earned a master's degree in public administration from Troy University and a bachelor's degree from Franklin & Marshall College.
