WIESBADEN, Germany -- Did you know U.S. Army Europe Soldiers and civilians are required to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program?

It is a free service that allows U.S. citizens traveling abroad to enroll their trips with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

The intent of STEP is to ensure the U.S. Embassy can contact you in an emergency, whether there is a natural disaster, civil unrest, or family emergency. STEP also helps you receive important information from the Embassy about safety conditions in your destination country, helping you make informed decisions about your travel plans.

"Enrollment provides peace of mind that there is a process for your family or the U.S. Embassy to contact you in an emergency and you will automatically receive the most current information about your destination country." said Robert Balcerzak, U.S. Army Europe Antiterrorism deputy division chief.

"Department of State provides a wide range of information, such as access to country information, travel alerts and warnings, maps, regional contact information, safe haven locations, and so much more" Balcerzak said, "to assist with day-to-day activities and while out enjoying a much-needed vacation."
