CASERMA EDERLE, Italy -- Vicenza Military Community members had the chance to listen to former Disney executive Lee Cockerell speak about how "creating magic" in businesses, organizations and communities can positively impact one's everyday life.

On Nov. 17, the Caserma Ederle Post Chapel held nearly 250 guests including civilians, Soldiers, families and Vicenza High School students. Cockerell's leadership seminar was broadcasted via Livestream, so those unable to attend would still have the opportunity to feel the inspiration.

Despite sharing years of experience on topics of leadership, management and clarity, Cockerell did not shy from telling intimate stories of his life. He spoke on a variety of topics from how he was raised on a farm in Oklahoma to when he had to step back from his career for a time to take care of his wife during illness.

Moving people to do the right thing within businesses or organizations is one of Cockerell's main priorities. The key to his success at Disney was his ability to hire the right people, he said. Being able to build trust with employers, employees and bosses is paramount when achieving success. Cockerell stated that his real title should have been Chief Environmentalist: Within his position and authority, Cockerell said his priority was to create an environment where 73,000 Disney cast members woke up every day wanting to go to work.

Reflecting on where to spend time in one's daily life was another topic of discussion. Cockerell stressed that where a person spends his/her time is where they are going to get results -- and the result, hopefully, is success.

Quality, clarity and expectations for excellence are vital variables when running a business, Cockerell said. Deciding what choices to make when presented with a problem is where Disney shines among other businesses.

For example, Cockerell shared a story about a mother who lost her baby's pacifier in a Disney store that had closed for the day. When a cast member (employee) was presented with a distressed mother, Cockerell said, the employee could have given two answers to the mother in regards to the pacifier: "The store is closed" or "Let me get the keys."

"You know, that's how you have to think about life. Each one of you have that choice-- 'Let me get the keys' or 'Tough luck.' We should get the keys," Cockerell said.

Cockerell was able to create a positive atmosphere with the Ederle audience even when talking about topics that have heavy influence on making or breaking a person. He challenged those in the room to ask themselves if they're being clear enough with the people around them, whether it is family, employers or children.

"It will take a lot of problems out of your life when you learn to be more clear and have the courage to tell people the truth," he said.
