Radford Army Ammunition Plant, Va. -- Providing support for our nation's Veterans, the Radford Army Ammunition Plant conducted its seventh wounded warrior hunt on the installation, here, November 4.
With support from the installation's Army staff, operating contractor, BAE Systems; and Armament Retooling and Manufacturing Support tenant, Orbital ATK; the hunters were provided a day of hunting, a lunch and a few small gifts. In coordination with the Virginia Department of Veterans Services and the Virginia Veteran and Family Support Program, six hunters from southwest Virginia were invited to participate in the hunt.
"Our first hunt included wounded warriors from Walter Reed Medical Center, since that time, RFAAP wanted to give something back to the local Veterans, which led to the partnering with the regional VDVS," said Len DiIoia, RFAAP.
Following an early morning safety briefing, each hunter was paired up with a RFAAP government and BAE volunteer who escorted them to their 'stand' areas. Ground blinds were prepositioned for the hunters in areas remote from the installation's production and plant activities. One hunter shot their second buck in as many years -- the only person to shoot one each year they participated.
In addition to the fall wounded warrior hunt, RFAAP's program has grown to include a wounded warrior fishing rodeo each spring.
"We feel very privileged to be able to honor our Veterans with a day of outdoor activities," said. Lt. Col. Alicia Masson, commander, RFAAP. "We hope to continue these events and get more Veterans involved every year."
