Knight's Brigade mourns one of their own

BAUMHOLDER, Germany -- A 16th Sustainment Brigade officer passed away while on leave in the United States November 26.

1st Lt. Michael Volanti, a Weston, Fla. native, served with the Special Troops Battalion's Charlie Detachment, 106th Financial Management Support Unit in Vicenza, Italy as a disbursing officer.

He is survived by his father James, mother Phyllis, brother Brandon, and sister Danielle.

"Michael Volanti was a dedicated and talented young officer with great energy and passion that inspired his fellow Soldiers and the leaders within the command and we are saddened by his loss," said Col. Michelle Letcher, the 16th SB commander. "His selfless service and dedication to our profession were evident through his support to sustaining a 'Strong Europe.' All of us within the Knight's Brigade offer our sincerest condolences to his Family, friends, and fellow Soldiers."

Volanti recently served with distinction while deployed to Kosovo, where he provided financial support as the Officer in Charge of a team of approximately a dozen U.S. Soldiers in support of a NATO mission.

"Lieutenant Volanti was an asset to the Special Troops Battalion as a dedicated and empowered junior leader. He contributed to achieving finance mission success to support U.S. Army Europe and U.S. Army Africa," said Lt. Col. Brian Ketz, the brigade's Special Troops Battalion Commander. "Michael was a role model Soldier that developed his peers and subordinates and he'll be missed."

No immediate cause of death has been determined and it is under investigation by the local authorities.

A memorial service is scheduled for Dec. 12 at Caserma Ederly, Vicenza, Italy.
