The annual nationwide America Recycles Day on Fort Knox Nov. 15 made efforts to bring awareness of repurposing, reusing and recycling for a cleaner America.
"We just want to make people aware of it and maybe get them headed in the right direction," said Bridgette Caico, the Qualified Recycling Program office clerk. "Here at Fort Knox, they really want everyone to recycle."
The Fort Knox Qualified Recycling Program Center set up a shredding station at the Exchange parking lot to invite anyone to shred documents, cards, receipts or recycle items for America Recycles Day.
"We've been here since 8 (a.m.) but we already have had a half a bin of shred from people who have taken advantage of the shred event," Caico said around 10 a.m. that day.
The secret to successful recycling is separating items and knowing where to take them.
Caico said many don't know they may take used motor or cooking oil to be recycled through the center as well.
"After Thanksgiving people will have this leftover peanut oil and cooking oil, and they can bring it to us," she said.
Fort Knox recycling accepts used or unused toners and inkjet cartridges, used motor and cooking oil, aluminum cans, plastic bottles, tin cans, scrap metals made of 50 percent or more metal, kitchen appliances, grills, swing sets, lawn mowers, stainless and mixed steel, cast iron, copper No. 1 and 2, brass, aluminum sheet and trim, aluminum extrusions and castings, empty 55 gallon drums, wooden and plastic pallets, cardboard, junk mail, magazines, catalogs, MRE outer wrappers, newspapers with inserts, plastics No. 1 through 7, shredded paper and CDs, white and colored paper and most lead acid batteries.
