GARMISCH, Germany - A team from the U.S. Army Medical Department Activity Bavaria (BMEDDAC) returned to Garmisch, November 16-18 to provide their annual influenza vaccinations to the U.S. military community. In order to make it easier for community members to get the flu shot, this year the team centralized vaccinations in one location and scheduled shots for as early as 6 a.m., and as late as 8 p.m. in the evenings.
Flu immunizations were made available on a walk-in basis and were open to all active duty military, family members, DoDEA employees and DoD civilians, local retirees as well as local national employees.
The Garmisch community, a part of the United States Army Garrison (USAG) Bavaria has a population of approximately 400 permanent active duty military and their family members in its footprint. The civilian employees and their families add another 1,000 residents to the local population.
"Our Garmisch military community is extremely thankful to the BMEDDAC team for once again coming to Garmisch to provide the flu shots. The seasonal flu is a serious disease and we take the warnings very seriously." said Michael Haney, Deputy Garrison Manager for the Garmisch military community. "Getting the shot and prevention is something we emphasize to our community members, so a huge 'Thank you' to the entire BMEDDAC team and leadership for coming to Garmisch."
The entire Garmisch active duty military population received flu shots this year during the three-day visit and a majority percentage of the civilian population was vaccinated as well.
The USAG Bavaria installation in Garmisch includes Sheridan Barracks and Artillery Kaserne, and supports three mission partners: the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies, the NATO School in nearby Oberammergau, and the Armed Forces Recreation Center.
