Munson Army Health Center medics partnered with the Platte County Sheriff's Department to teach metro area law enforcement tactical combat first- aid Friday, Oct. 15 in Kansas City, Mo.
Two MAHC medics with years of combat experience spent the day training skills to metro law enforcement officers. The skills that they learn are needed to help save lives in the field.
"I am a champion for this program because the soldiers bring a different perspective to first aid" said Nancy S. Penrod, Detective Platte Country Sheriff's Office. " I can teach this class, but it means more coming from soldiers who have real world experience."
Sfc. Charles A. Griffith has had three tours in Iraq and one tour in Afghanistan and Sgt. Daniel E. Deberdt has had one tour in Iraq.
"The skills that I am showing the students I know work because I have used them in combat" said Sfc. Griffith.
The metro law enforcement officers have an opportunity twice a year to take this course. The curriculum starts with a slide show, hands-on application and then real life scenario-based training.
"Having these skills buys time for the injured person while waiting for medical personnel to arrive" said Detective Penrod.
At the end of the training, the students take a written exam to pass the course and they participate in several scenarios to include an active shooter drill.
