FORT BENNING, Ga., (Oct. 26, 2016) -- Despite lacking team depth, the Fort Benning Doughboys put up a spirited fight Oct. 20 against the bigger and more experienced Columbus State Cougars during the annual Doughboy Bowl on Fort Benning.
The Doughboys kept the game close, but the Cougars experience proved to be the difference as they cruised past Fort Benning 34-24.
"It's always disappointing to lose but I felt like the team really came together," said Jonathan Logan, 1st Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, quarterback for the Doughboys. "We played a great game. A couple of things just didn't go our way, but we gave it everything we had. I felt like we really created a bond here for our team."
"Is it a letdown? Absolutely," said Thomas Charles Threatt Jr, 5th Squadron, 15th Cavalry Regiment, assistant head coach and offensive coordinator. "However, I think that we have found some phenomenal players for next years' season. We were just outnumbered. Teams generally have 70 or 80 players to our 34. To add to this, some of the players on our team have never played football in their life, but we are open to new players. We have to make adjustments though to accommodate for these things."
The Doughboy Bowl brought out Soldiers from all over Fort Benning to socialize and tailgate before the game. Soldiers and residents snacked on funnel cakes, hot dogs, burgers and more as they prepared for the game.

"We're big in community service and giving back. I served for 26 years," said Terry Wright, Kappa Lambda Chi military fraternity. "We try to come out and support the team and the military."
Threatt stated that he wanted to give special thanks to Marissa Whentley for supporting the Doughboy team throughout the season. The Doughboys completed their season at 0-5.
